Bringing Tatsuo Shimabuku's Isshinryu to new generations

News from the Isshinryu Hall of Fame 2010

27 July 2010
Sensei Mitchum, Glenda, John Ingram, and Dan Holloway attended the Isshinryu Hall of Fame on July 23–24, 2010.  We had a great time with other members, and Sensei spent some time with Tokumura Sensei.  Sensei Mitchum sometimes refers to Tokumura as his "dojo buddy" from Okinawa.  The banquet and tournament were well attended and Sensei Holloway had the opportunity to serve as judge for six different divisions.  We had a chance to get caught up with a lot of old friends as well.  Senseis Tom Lewis, Tommy True, Jerry Lewis, J. C. Burris, Scott and Ruth Shamblin, Toby and Diane Cooling, Bill Duessel, and Heidi Gauntner were at IHOF, to mention a few.

Sensei Mitchum and Glenda were presented special gifts.  The US House of Representatives gave Sensei a flag that flew over the three places that the terrorists attacked on 9-11-01: Shanksville, PA, the Pentagon, and Ground Zero.  Along with a special commendation of service, they were boxed, framed and glassed for historical purposes.  This will be the last flag presented in such manner and has the distinction of being number 12. Sensei also received an invitation from the Commandant of the Marine Corps for a personal visit to his home and tour of the facilities.  Glenda received an invitation from the Commandant's wife to come for a personal tour and visit as well. Congratulations to both!

The Hall of Fame Board of Directors have chosen Chattanooga, Tennessee as the site for next year's tournament, on July 29–30, 2011, in honor of Sensei Mitchum.  We'd like to see a great turnout on behalf of UIKA members to celebrate this honorable event.
